So What Is National Injury Prevention Day?
National Injury Prevention Day, which is on November 18, is a day of awareness in which health and safety organizations join forces to advocate for the importance of creating safe environments. The day serves to positively impact communities and individuals as it is a day to expand opportunities towards safety and brings more attention to underlying causes of injury.
Historical Context:
The origins of National Injury Prevention Day began in 2020, when Dr. Barbara Barlow, founder and current executive director of the Injury Free Coalition For Kids, saw the influx of school shooting incidents during 2018 and sought for change. Dr. Barlow wanted to make a difference in all this needless death, so she created the day as a call to action for these unsafe environments. On the day, the Coalition gathered together to discuss ongoing issues and worked to create a solution as well as promoting wellness and giving tips for living a safer life. For more effect all across the nation, allied centers teamed up with their respective cities and lit them up in bright green lights. Specific regions also tackle different issues, such as home safety, fire safety, etc. Because of the success of the first rendition of the gathering, it has become an annual event for those concerned about present-day issues to voice their opinions and come together with others to make a difference.
